Dear Meli,
I am currently taking a class on prosperity consciousness. I have to say, I’m having a hard time with it! First of all, I know that everything is spiritual, which means that money is spiritual too. But it still seems wrong to me for money – or wanting money – to be a part of my spiritual practice. Also, if I’m following my spiritual path and getting in the flow of Spirit, won’t money just come on its own? I should also say one more thing: I don’t have a lot of money in my life. And I would like more, that’s why I’m taking the class. But I’m feeling conflicted about the whole thing. Help!
Conflicted in Concord

Dear Conflicted,
There seem to be some misguided rules in the culture of spiritual folks. I’ve found them in myself, and see them in friends and clients. For instance, the rule that says being poor is virtuous or pure, and wanting or having money is not. I used to ascribe to this kind of thinking, too. Coincidentally enough, I didn’t have much money either!
Huh. Go figure.
But now I have come to believe – and see – that the Universe is infinitely abundant. In fact, there is no limit to this source, whatever you might call It. And if this universal source is loving, as I believe it is, then how could receiving more of It be a bad thing?
This leads quite beautifully to the second part of your question: If you devote yourself to spirituality, getting fully in the flow, won’t money come on its own? Well, no. Not if you’re telling it not to come to you!
If you believe that only evil people, or selfish or greedy people, want money – and you don’t want to be one of those people – then you will push money away from you so that you won’t be evil, selfish or greedy.
One of my favorite affirmations is “I love money, and money loves me!” I used this to help myself get okay with wanting money. It has worked for me. It’s okay with me, today, that I love money. And I find that money seems to like me more too!
Another affirmation I use regularly is: “Money pours itself into my life with loving intention.” This always brings a picture to my mind of a bunch of money, pouring over me, kissing me on its way into my life. This sweet image has helped me allow money to come into my life and be a blessing.
Somewhere along the line, you bought (pun intended) the party-line: Wanting money is bad. But in our current world, this neutral substance we call money can equal freedom. And freedom is a beautiful quality of Spirit.
And Love Itself would want you to have greater freedom! How about you let yourself off the hook for wanting it too!?
Here’s to your freedom through abundance!

Hi Meli,
I really appreciate this post. For one thing, I think there’s a lot of misunderstanding about money and Spirit. Also, a lot of people just don’t even want to talk about it, or deal with it. Thank you for doing both.
Peace,
Joe
Hi Joe!
I love to talk about stuff that others don’t like to talk about – it’s gotten me in some trouble in my life, but it also works well for me. 🙂 When it comes to money, I hope to deal with more and more. LOL Thanks for the kind & supportive shout-out!

Amen Meli! I used to be conflicted too, until I realized that the more money I have, the more good I can do with it! I love money and money loves me is my mantra too. From the moment I made that change in my thinking, I always have more than enough, it’s amazing! Picturing the heavens opening pouring down floods of abundance for us all. Thank you!
Aman back atcha’ Michelle!
And yay you (and yay us) for NOT going with the sad status quo on this! Sometimes with a client, I hear them say something that implies they’re thinking that money is evil, or those who have lots of it are bad in some way. I like to point out the very thing you said – more money means the ability to do more good!
I’d also say that almost always, where there IS much money, there HAS been great good done which is what started the flow of it in the first place. 🙂
I love these affirmations! I’m going to be using these, and I look forward to all those money kisses!! 🙂
Yay Betty! So happy you’ll use those!
And you know what they say: Can’t ever have too many kisses! 🙂
I grew up in a house that lived paycheck to grocer and going without. The feeling of lack came from social pressures. 2nd hand clothes not as nice as the other kid’s; teased about “only jelly” sandwiches when the peanut butter and tuna purchase lost out to the need for new shoes. AND I never heard anything but gratitude from my mother for what we did have. We learned to write gushing thank you notes to the friends and relatives who gave us hand-me-down school clothes. This made it easy to learn the spiritual practice of gratitude as an adult and see the fruits of this powerful causative energy. To embody the Laws of Circulation. To trust that I would always have more than enough. And I did! Even during long years of racking up credit card debt to pay for gas and groceries, I was grateful for the credit limit and ENOUGH to make the minimum payments. Grateful for the flow. And lo and behold the flow increased. I’m out of debt with ENOUGH left over to give to my favorite places and causes. Those that inspire and feed me spiritually. Now It’s more than enough! And I “owe” it all to faith in and gratitude for an abundant universe.
Beautiful, Martha!
I LOVE your story! Thank you so much for sharing it here! I hope you share it often with people.
I feel quite inspired by your mom, and her attitude or thankfulness in the midst of less abundant times. I, too, have found that the practice of gratitude, even in the tightest of times, can help me to see that I have so much. And in the seeing all that I have, I feel authentic gratitude. And that, as we know, is a magnet to more of the same – more reasons for gratitude. Just like you said – and did!
I just LOVE this story! Thank you, again, for taking the time to share it here!
Thank YOU, for the opportunity, Melissa! I tell parts of this story often, whenever inspired. You are an inspiration.
How very sweet of you to say, Martha! You have inspired my life many times….This is another one of those times! 🙂
