Dear Meli,
This may be a silly question, but do you really need to meditate if you’re on a spiritual path? I ask because I really hate to meditate. I have a really hard time sitting still and quieting my mind. I’m a runner and that seems to be my preferred form of meditation. But I always wonder if I’m missing something by not being a proper meditator. Do you have any thoughts on this?

Dear Ruminating,
Many people assume that meditation has to look a certain way. Sitting silently, crossed legged, maybe even with a shaved head and wearing robes. But that is just one picture of meditation. There are many ways to meditate!
Meditation is the practice of focusing one’s mind, or thinking about something deeply, for a period of time. That’s it! The keys are that it is a practice, and that it’s conscious awareness of the mind or thinking. Simple, right?
Even traditional meditation gurus acknowledge walking meditation as a perfectly respectable form of practice. And who’s to say what you could be doing while focusing your mind?! If you are aware of your thinking while doing almost anything, it can be considered a form of meditation.
I enjoy sitting with my eyes closed in a dark environment with music or a guided meditation playing, or in silence. I feel particularly available to Spirit’s communication this way, as I’m not distracted by the rest of the world, or even what my body is doing. But I haven’t always felt like that type of meditation was a good fit for me!
I have a good friend who draws as a meditation practice, another who walks, and one who flies an airplane! Each of them consider their meditation right for them, and have a deepened spiritual life because of their practice.
So go run, my dear! And awaken your awareness with every step!
Blessings and Love to you in all you do!
In Joy,
Meli

Hi Meli, I really appreciate this article. I am not a meditator in the usual sense of the word. I like all your suggestions here. Thank you.
Hi Frank, You’re welcome! Enjoy all your forms of meditation, however they are for you! Love and Blessings, Meli
Wow – this is great! Great timing, too! I was just giving myself a hard time about my meditation practice. Guess I don’t have to do that any more!
Hi Nancy, No – you don’t have to/get to give yourself a hard time anymore. Yay!!!! Big Love and Blessings to you, Meli
