I’ve heard it mentioned more than once that older souls often suffer from low self-esteem. But I’ve never heard it explained why that is.
After pondering this question over time, I’ve come up with a theory. (And by “I,” I mean me and my wife Melissa. She helped me mightily with this post!)
In terms of metaphysical thinking, we are both human and Divine. We have a small egoic human self and a spiritual expanded self. (Ultimately, there is no duality and our human selves and Divine selves are one, but we’re talking about the earth plane here. We live in a world of perceived duality, and it can be helpful to discuss this issue in the context of that duality.)
Also in terms of metaphysical thinking, the soul progresses in age over many lifetimes.
Younger souls are absorbed with learning about life on this planet. They are more than likely to be in survival mode, learning how to meet their basic needs and figuring out how to get along with others. Younger souls may experience low self-esteem, but they are less likely to be aware of it because of their outward, survival-oriented focus.
By the time a soul has matured, they have begun to look within. This journey within includes many discoveries, including and often low self-esteem. I would argue that most people suffer from low self-esteem to some degree, but their inward journey makes older souls more likely to be aware of it.
So that’s one reason that older souls are more likely to suffer from low self-esteem.
They’re simply more aware of it.
But why do so many of us, older and younger souls alike, have low self-esteem in the first place?
Here’s where my (and Melissa’s) theory comes into play.
Low self-esteem is an ego invention. That’s why we all have it to some degree.
Our human ego self knows that it’s no match for our expanded spiritual self. Even if it’s not conscious of this expanded self, as in the case of younger souls, it knows that the ego alone is a puny little thing.
By the time we’re older souls, we’re aware of this dichotomy. We’re aware that our ego alone is small and contracted compared to our Divine self. The reasons for our low self-esteem become more apparent. We’re not Gods. We are mere mortals.
But ultimately we do have a Divine self, which is where the true remedy for low self-esteem kicks in.
Spirit loves us unconditionally. All the time.
When we can open to this, when we can allow it, our low self-esteem melts in the embrace of the Divine.
We experience the spiritual self-esteem that I talked about in a recent post.
So I guess I’m saying that having low self-esteem is a good thing?
It means you’re aware. It means you’re on the journey and you’re on track.
Indeed, being gentle with our low self-esteem is a sign that we’re living more fully in our Divine self. We’re seeing all aspects of ourselves with Love.
And that, as they say, is worth the price of admission.

my own self-esteem.❤️❤️
Hi Kathy,
Well, our esteem of you is verrrrrrry high! 🙂

First, I believe that all (or most) of us that following your and other ‘new thought’ based traditions are old souls who have been oppressed, minimized and criticized for many life times for our alternative beliefs and actions. Some may carry those memories of playing small to avoid criticism into this life. So, I’m happy to read another (and complementary) interpretation of our struggle of self esteem. Thank you, you two are the best!
Hi Angelina,
I agree with you, I think that a lot of old souls definitely feel minimized and criticized from this and many other lifetimes.
Thank you for joining the discussion! 🙂
Sending lots of love!

Absolutely wonderful, and the beauty of your theory lies in its simplicity. You have helped me a lot. Many thanks!
Hi Luis,
