First off, I need to say that I’m not a conspiracy theorist.
And it’s not just because I don’t look good in tinfoil.
I don’t believe that Elvis Presley faked his death.
I don’t believe that the British royal family are descended from blood-drinking, shape-shifting alien reptiles.
And I have no idea who killed JFK.
I once heard conspiracy theories explained as the phenomenon of taking a collection of loosely related facts and weaving them together into an intricate narrative that is much more cohesive and orderly than what actually happened.
In other words, conspiracy theories add a level of simplistic organization not in line with the messy, complex, and often contradictory reality that is life on earth.
That said, there is one conspiracy I can get down with.
A conspiracy so rich, so deep, it boggles the mind and senses.
The ultimate conspiracy theory?
Material reality.
Anyone who’s ever had a spiritual revelation, myself included, will tell you that material reality is a scam.
Once you’re onto the scam, it’s hard to not rush to the highest rooftop and yell out to anyone who will listen:
This isn’t all there is! There’s so much more going on than you can comprehend with your senses! Can’t you see?! Or, can’t you not-see-because-it’s-deeper-than-that?!?!? I know I sound crazy, but……
Yeah. It’s exactly how the conspiracy theory folks sound.
They know this secret thing that a lot of people don’t know. And when they try to tell others about it, they sound absolutely bonkers.
When I first stumbled onto the spiritual path, I lost some friends. Friends who thought that what I was into was weird. Or they just couldn’t relate to me anymore.
That was hard.
It’s still hard sometimes.
It can feel lonely to have an awareness that not everyone shares.
Ultimately, spiritual awareness is about experience. And if someone hasn’t had an experience of spiritual reality and expansion, there’s nothing you can say that’s going to give them that experience.
Indeed, anything you do say is going to sound like you’ve taken a deep dive into an obscure corner of the internet.
But there’s another side to the You-Have-To-Experience-It-To-Understand-It phenomenon.
Once you do experience spiritual reality, you can’t go back. You can’t see the world the same way again.
And you have access to a Power greater than you are, which infuses your life with continual wonder.
Unlike conspiracy theories within material reality, which impose a level of simplistic organization onto complex messiness, a conspiracy theory about material reality opens us up to an infinite complexity heretofore unacknowledged and unseen.
If that makes me sound like tinfoil is my favorite color, so be it!

I LOVE this!!! So true. I am grateful everyday that I found this teaching that allows me to live in conscious union with the Divine of my understanding!
The loneliness of participating in a Reality that others don’t believe in is nothing compared to the loneliness of the “rational materialism” that I was brought up with, or the judgmental separatism that I was shown in mainstream religion. The All is really good company, and I am grateful for Presence every day. Somewhere, in some way, everybody will eventually get it. Because it’s there.
Beautifully stated, Les. Thank you for this! 🙂
