Yes, I know it’s a bold claim.
And I know I’m an American, and Americans are known for wanting things done quickly and easily, even if it’s at the expense of the environment and the rest of humanity.
But hear me out!
This won’t hurt the planet or anyone else!
And it has the potential to radically change your life for the better!
Here’s how it works.
Each morning, as soon as possible after you wake up, you set your intention to have an awesome day.
And when I say set your intention, I mean set your intention.
This is not a mamby-pamby intention.
This is not: Gee, it would be nice if I had an awesome day, even though I probably won’t.
This is setting a strong idea that your day will be awesome.
Also, given that you have 10 whole seconds, you can include more than just awesome in your intention for your day.
I’ve been picking 3 qualities and using them to describe my awesome day ahead.
The 3 qualities I’ve been working with are: fun, relaxing and productive.
Thus, I use my 10 seconds after waking up to say this:
When I say it, I take the time to really feel it. That’s why it takes 10 seconds, cuz I really milk it.
You can certainly take longer than 10 seconds, but you don’t need to. If you really feel it, and you really mean it, those ten seconds are all you need.
(And if you have problems feeling it at first, you can start off by saying I’m willing to believe that I’m going to have the most fun, the most relaxing and the most fill-in-the-blank day ever!)
Now, it certainly helps to have other practices throughout your day to support your 10 second shot of positivity. Things like exercise and meditation and yoga.
But here’s the cool thing: When you start off your day with such a life-affirming intention, you’re way more likely to attract all kinds of other groovy things that are going to make your life better.
I was already doing lots of groovy-spiritual-type-things before I started this practice.
But this quick 10 seconds in the morning has strengthened and energized these practices – and my whole life – in an amazing way.
What have you got to lose?
10 seconds of your life!
That’s it!

Oh heck yes! And I take a few seconds to reset feel-good intentions throughout the day.
Oooooh. Nice. I like the “reset” option. Thank you! 🙂
I love this but sometimes I don’t wake up all clear and lively but rather more like sunshine breaking over the Oregon mountains – slow and a little foggy. Got any suggestions for those of us who don’t wake up bouncing out of bed so I can remember to set an intention in the first place?
Bright eyed and bushy tailed at noon,
River
Hi River, You make a good point. I am totally a morning person, so this practice is perhaps a little biased. Here’s one idea: If you’re not a morning person, perhaps setting an intention before you go to bed the night before is the way to go. You could even put a visual reminder somewhere on near your bed, to remind you. 🙂 XOZ
From BJ Fogg’s “Tiny Habits,” when my feetnhis the floor, I say “Today is going to be a great day.” And if I am not sure, I say, “Today is going to be a great day, somehow.”
I like adding the three specific intentions.
I also add a few deep breaths to let the blood start flowing before I stand up and do my morning routine. Maybe it takes 20 seconds. I am worth it!
Hi Will,
Thank you. I love this. And I love that you do this every day! You ARE worth it. 🙂
