Dear Meli,

I am a spiritual teacher with over three decades of experience. During that time, I have been teaching and leading workshops out of my home, as well as doing some private spiritual coaching work. Covid definitely changed things, but I was able to switch much of my work to online groups and sessions, so it wasn’t too bad. But – I’m still struggling financially. Even before Covid, I was barely paying my bills. Everyone says I should charge more, but I’m worried that if I do, I’ll lose the people I have. I’ve been doing inner work about prosperity, but I still feel blocked. Do you have any words of wisdom about this?

Paralyzed by Prosperity

Dear Paralyzed,

Good on ya’, as they say down under, for making the shifts needed to get through this recent 18 months and keep your practice going! And thank you for ALL you do to bless lives with your work!

Prosperity work, in my mind, always circles back to knowing your own worth and deservingness. There can be many possible layers to this, of course. You could have great self-esteem, for instance, but believe that someone doing spiritual work shouldn’t be paid well. (And, yes, I mention this as an example because it’s a common, crusty, old, and outdated belief among spiritual peeps. To which I say – phooey! There is no more valuable work! So why not be able to eat while doing it?!)

For your personal inner work, that’s where I would focus your attention. Find the reason why this struggle is “fitting” for your subconscious. What belief might say, “Yes, it’s perfect that I have less than I need because…” and fill in the blank. Then find the source of that lie, and blast that old misunderstanding with a strong shot of Truth and Reality!

Whenever I’ve been at a point of raising my rates for my work, there are two additional practices I’ve done. These have helped me to get comfortable.

1) I practice saying my new rate in the mirror. I stand in the mirror in the morning and say, “My rate is $100 an hour” a few times a day. I suggest doing this until there is zero charge or emotional reaction to the amount you’re stating.

2) I give existing clients plenty of notice about the new rate. With some, I’ve let them know that if they need to consult further or negotiate the rate change, we can discuss it. I also let them know how long it’s been since I changed my rates. (Historically, I only did so every 3-5 years.) I give most people about 3 months notice, while charging new clients the new rate as they came on board.

You might ask a friend to practice with you and give you feedback. Tell them, as if they’re a client, as many times as it takes until you are completely “lined up” about your new fees. Once every part of you agrees with your rate change, you’ll find it easy to talk about! And once you have no charge (no pun intended) on it, neither will your clients.

So you go! Charge! And know that your value is infinite, so a rate increase really means nothing anyway. Just saying.

Big Blessings and Love to you in all you do!

Meli
