A while back, I wrote a post about the elf self.
The elf self is a kinder, gentler name for the ego. It’s the part of us that’s cut off from our Higher Self. Or thinks it’s cut off from our Higher Self.
Self – S(pirit) = elf. Get it?!
Viewing the ego as an elf is great for a lot of reasons. It’s harder to condemn an elf than the ego. They’re so friggin’ cute!
Seeing the ego as an elf helps you to stop hating this part of yourself and start loving it.
That’s really cool and groovy and everything. But there’s something more I need to say about our little elf friends. Something that comes into play when we take our little elves out into the big wide world.
Loving the elf is one thing.
Letting the elf run your life is another.
Especially when it comes to manifestation.
Here’s what I’m talking about:
The elf comes up with all kinds of ideas about what we should do. Emphasis on should.
The elf doesn’t take the Self’s ideas into account. The elf doesn’t even acknowledge that there is a Self.
When we follow the elf’s guidance, we find ourselves doing all kinds of stuff. Like entering careers we don’t really like, but think we should do. Or putting financial considerations over the considerations of our hearts.
Following the elf’s guidance is like being stuck in a Keebler elf factory, slaving away making somebody else’s cookies.
But you don’t want to make somebody else’s cookies.
You want to make your own cookies.
The world needs your cookies!
Bringing the Self back into the picture, especially if the elf has been running the factory for a long time, can take some work.
Meditation is one of my favorite ways to get back in touch with the Self’s vision.
There’s also affirmations, vision boards, and gratitude practice. All of these can go a long way to booting out the elf and empowering the Self.
Melissa and I also have online classes to help clear any blocks that may be standing in your way between you and your Higher Self.
The best part about manifesting from the Self instead of the elf is that Self-lead manifestation works way better.
One of the most common complaints from people when they first get into the manifestation business is that it doesn’t work.
I tried to manifest a new car but it didn’t happen. I tried to manifest my dream job, but I’m still stuck at my old one.
The number one reason manifestation doesn’t “work” is because you’ve put the elf in charge.
Remember the Keebler factory? And somebody else’s cookies?
No fun.
Today is the day we put the Self in charge.
We love you, little elf, but your job as factory leader is over.
You get to do what you’re good at: Looking cute and taking your cues from the Self.
When we demote the elf, everything is in its proper order.
Then the Self is running our life.
The result?
Best. Cookies. Ever.

I was in a fabulous women’s group for years in Oregon, facilitated by a wonderful jungian therapist. When Eckhardt Tolle’s work became popular, she said something that has always stuck with me. She said the goal was not to get rid of the ego, but to create an ego that was in service to the soul. I love that. Which really fits in with the work of the Untethered Soul… in that we create our ego and personality. And your story of not letting it be in charge. Lots of breath work needed for sure.
Hi Marina,
Oooooooh. I love that! Thank you so much for sharing that. You rock! And by that I mean, every part of you rocks! Ego, personality, and soul! 🙂
