Is it really possible to have a relationship with a Higher Power?

I mean, that’s a pretty imposing thing to have a relationship with.

Like Cher.

Except this Cher also created the sky and the seas and everything in creation.

Kind of intimidating.

When I was a kid, the only version of a Higher Power I knew of was Old School Bible God.

Dude had problems.

He would get all pissed off and curse and smite people, but then he was sometimes nice and you were supposed to turn to him when you had problems.

What?

Needless to say, Old School Bible God never worked for me. That’s why, when I was a kid, I didn’t believe in God at all.

Then, in my early 20s, I had a spiritual experience.

I never would have gotten on board the Higher Power bandwagon if I hadn’t experienced it myself.

But I did.

That experience led me to realize that there’s an energy in all things. It’s alive and luminous.

Not only that, it’s also loving.

And it’s in everyone.

When I realized this, having a relationship with a Higher Power suddenly became a lot more interesting. And a lot more desirable.

I called it the Universe then. I realized I could talk to it. And it would respond to me.

These days, I call it the Divine.

I still talk to it, and it still responds. I ask it for help, and I get it. (Though sometimes not in the form I expect.)

The coolest thing about having a relationship with a Higher Power is that it’s both inside and all around me.

So when I’m interacting with it, I’m interacting with the essence of the Divine inside and outside myself.

When I first got involved in the New Thought movement, I was told we didn’t refer to our Higher Power as “You.” Saying “You” implies separation. It implies Old School Bible God.

But when you know that a Higher Power is both inside and outside of you, then calling it You and having a relationship with it becomes this totally cool, paradoxical thing. You can’t define it with your logical mind, but it works.

At least, that’s my experience.

So, how do you build a relationship with a Higher Power?

It’s like any other relationship. You start talking.

And listening.

And being quiet together.

Everyone has a unique relationship with their Higher Power. There’s no one right way to do it

The most important thing is to simply start. Say Hello.

And then see what happens.
