Letting in prosperity can be an uncomfy topic for us spiritual types.

After all, Spirit is all about love and light. Twinkles and rainbows. It can feel like a contradiction to bring Spirit into a conversation about money, which – let’s face it – has a pretty dirty rep.

Sure, everything is Spirit, so that includes money. But money’s dirty rep can sometimes get in the way of allowing it into our oh-so-spiritual lives.

I am definitely guilty of the above train of thought. Which is why I’m always celebrating any experience that gently, or not so gently, derails my Money-Is-Dirty train off the track and replaces it with a new train: The Abundance Express. A happy, expanded, prosperous train!

My recent derailing experience started with a visit to our phone and internet provider. When I can, I make a call to our provider instead of a visit. I’m not a huge fan of phone calls – my preferred method of communication is email – but I definitely prefer a call to an in-person visit at a store. This has nothing to do with Covid and everything to do with my little hermitty self.

In this case, however, there was an issue with our cell phones that necessitated an in-person visit.

The visit itself was not that bad, especially because I’d made an appointment ahead of time. A nice young woman waited on me and took care of my problem lickity split.

I’d brought a mailing I’d recently received from our provider, one that boasted of lower rates for our internet service. So at the end of the visit, I asked about the offer on the flyer.

It turned out that offer included cable TV, which we didn’t need or want. The nice young woman tried to sell it to me anyway, but I politely declined.

“Can we get the offer without the cable?” I asked.

“Totally,” said the nice young woman.

It was at this point she admitted that she agreed with my choice to decline the cable service she was trying to sell me a minute earlier. “I’d never use it either,” she confided.

She quickly typed a bunch of numbers and letters into her keyboard and emerged with a quote.

Our new internet service would cost less than half of what we were currently paying. Not only that, it came with a brand new, totally free router. No more monthly rentals. Not only that, but our new service would be about twenty times faster than what we’d had.

I came home with our new router and shared the news with Melissa. We have been enjoying our cheaper, faster service ever since.

As I was pondering my experience at the internet store, I realized that there were three specific things I needed to do in order to open to the greater prosperity that was available to me.

1. I needed to be willing to move outside my comfort zone.

As I said, I don’t usually visit the store. I make a call. It seems easier, and I don’t have to put on shoes or a jacket. Or pants, even! But my interaction with the nice young woman at the store was actually much smoother and more efficient than my experience of using the phone. Even though it seemed like a pain in the hiney to put on shoes and a jacket (and pants!) and venture out into the world, it ended up being a much better choice than staying at home.

How many times have I wanted greater prosperity in a particular area, only to keep repeating the same behaviors and being baffled that nothing is changing?

Many times. I have done that many times.

My internet visit was a reminder of the power of stepping outside my usual routine in order to open to my greater good.

2. I needed to be willing to ask for help.

My new good wasn’t just handed to me, I needed to ask for it. I brought the flyer. I asked about the deal. And then, when the deal was explained, I asked if we could get the service in a way that worked for us. And it turned out we could!

None of those things would have happened if I hadn’t been willing to ask.

Again, when I’m stuck in an experience of Less Than Prosperity, I’ve often forgotten to ask for more. I assume that the Less I have is the best I can get. That I’m not worthy of more. Or I call forth the whole Money-Is-Dirty-And-Not-To-Be-Discussed-In-Spiritual-Circles train and let it choo choo around my internal track.

But I don’t have to do that!

I can simply ask. And then be open to receive.

3. I had to be willing to update my equipment.

We couldn’t get faster internet without a new router. We’d been stuck with slower internet because we had an outdated router and we didn’t even know it.

Because of my willingness to complete steps one and two, stepping outside my comfort zone and asking for help, I ran right into step three:

Update the old and bring in the new.

With prosperity work, the items in need of updating are often old ideas and patterns. This is why spiritual practice is so great at aiding and abetting our much-needed updates.

Meditation. Affirmations. Gratitude practice. Affirmative prayer.

All these modalities can help dismantle the old ideas and patterns and replace them with new, expanded ones.

Spiritual practice isn’t just great with opening to increased prosperity, of course. It’s good for all parts of life. These three steps can be used to open to greater experiences of health, love, spiritual connection, or anything else you’re wanting more of.

There’s one more thing about my experience at the internet store that’s emblematic of prosperity work, and spiritual practice, in general.

My greater good had been available all along. I just didn’t know it.

We’d been living our lives with our old router, slower internet, and high fees. At any point, I could have broken out of my old patterns and ventured out to the store. Indeed, the nice young woman told me I should make a point to come back every year a week before our latest deal expires and ask for a new one.

In other words, every year I’ll need to repeat steps one, two, and three.

Every year, I’ll be reminded that I can repeat these three steps in every area of my life. As I do, I’ll be hopping aboard the Abundance Express. The Vitality Express. The Love Express.
