When I first discovered that Spirit is real, that there’s a Power greater than me that’s responsive to my thoughts and beliefs, it blew my mind.
This awareness led me to a bunch of wonderful tools that help me work with this Power to create a better life for myself and others: meditation, affirmations, visioning, affirmative prayer.
All of these tools rock.
And there’s another tool that often gets left out of the equation.
A superpower that’s so simple, it can get overlooked.
The superpower?
Asking for Help.
It goes like this: I’m tossing and turning in the middle of the night. I’m stressing about five thousand and fifty-four things, and sleep and I are not on speaking terms. I try to relax my body. I repeat soothing mantras to myself. Nothing’s working. And then I remember! I ask for Help going back to sleep.
Does it work every time? No.
Does it work most of the time? Yes.
Here’s another example. I’m trying to remove a screw from whatever-it’s-screwed-into. I’ve tried all the tricks I know to get the screw loose, but it’s not unloosing. What to do? Oh yeah! Ask for Help!
This one has worked virtually every time I’ve tried it.
I have to say, it’s humbling.
I know that Spirit exists and I am eternally sourced by Spirit. But still. The human part of me likes to feel in charge. In control.
When I ask for Help and get it so easily, it almost feels like cheating.
Things are supposed to be … harder? I should have to stress and strive more?
See what I mean? It’s a tough sell.
Learning to ask for – and receive – Help is a process of love. Love for myself for letting go of striving. Love for Spirit for being always available to help me. And Love from Spirit, that vast open energy that’s blasting acres of aid and assistance everywhere in the Universe, all the time.
In some ways, it’s easier for me to remember to ask for Help when I’m having a “big” problem: health or financial challenges, for example. Things like loosening a screw seem inconsequential – way too trivial to be bothering Spirit about.
But Spirit is EverywhereAllTheTime! There’s nothing too small for Spirit. Asking for Help with the “little” things is a commitment to relying on Spirit all the time.
I’m going to say that again:
Asking for Help with the “little” things is a commitment to relying on Spirit all the time.
Saying I don’t need Spirit’s help for the little things is my ego’s sneaky way of trying to regain “control.” First I hand over the little things, and the next thing I know, I’m trying to fix the big things as well. All alone. Tossing and turning in the middle of the night trying to come up with a “fix.”
When, like Dorothy with her ruby slippers, the fix was there all along.
Another thing I love about asking for Help is that it can make you look really good. Like I said, it’s a superpower. When you ask for Help with EverythingAllTheTime, people look at all your accomplishments and shower you with praise and accolades. But it’s not just you who accomplished the groovy thing that everyone’s oohing and aahing about. The groovy thing was accomplished by you asking and Spirit helping.
You get to be like those rock stars who accept their awards, point to the sky, and thank Jesus. I used to think they were being silly, or fake-humble. But now I get it. Those rock stars know that they’ve accessed a superpower. They might forget that they’ve accessed this power, as rock stars are wont to do. But the more they can remember the true Source of their accomplishments, they more likely they’ll get to keep on keepin’ on.
Whatever it is – big, small, or in between – asking for Help can make it better.
And if you ask for Help and, next thing you know, you’re wearing tight clothing and wailing at the top of your lungs for adoring fans? Hey, when Spirit steps in, anything can happen!

Thanks “Z”! I am in total agreement with you. I ask for help every day , all day long and by starting my day on my knee’s reciting the serenity prayer I get a boost. It makes my day a beautiful adventure! Higher Power exists and makes life a wonderful journey!
Hi Steve, Yay! I love how you express this. Every day IS a beautiful adventure. It’s so wonderful to know that. BIG Love, Z
Thanks Z, Too true! Spirit is always there and never too busy to hear my Ask. I am so grateful for Spirits constant gifts that come to me in unimaginable ways. Peace and Love, Gaelen
Hi Gaelen, Yes! Spirit is never too busy. That’s such a great way of saying it! Peace and Love to you too!!! XOZ
Z, you are just THE BEST! I love the fun you bring to spiritual connection – the easy-to-read way you write and the happy drawings. Thank you for this reminder to ask Spirit to help me today. My dear friend is in the psych ward and I have been swarmed with dark emotions. I felt angry, afraid, sad, confused, even hateful towards what happened. I asked for help after reading your piece and got clear instructions from Spirit on next steps to take. Now I feel freedom and peace. 🙏🏻😃💕
Hi Sonya, Wow – thank you so much for this comment. I am so sorry to hear about your friend, and I am SO happy to hear that Spirit gave you clear instructions. YAY for that!!! BIG Love and Blessings, Z
Dear Z, I so needed to hear your message, your reminder. I’ve been challenged with some new health related things. I meditate. I visualize. I speak affirmative prayer knowing the Spirit is perfect and whole and therefore I am perfect and whole. I believe these help. What I have not done is just to ask for help. Pure, Simple, Humble. Easy Peasy. And I NEVEr think to ask for help with small things. Everywhere, all the time.
Thank you! Laurel
Hi Laurel, Yay! I’m so glad to hear this. Yes – ask for Help everywhere all the time!! It’s really cool. Thank you for your comment!! XOXOZ
I am asking for patience right now as being pulled in different directions seems to be my dilemma daily. Have an awesome groundhog day! May light emerge from the shadow of that fat little rodent, lol
Hi Joan, Happy Groundhog Day to you as well!! And here’s to light emerging from the shadow of fat little rodents everywhere!! And here’s to you getting that patience you’re asking for as well!! XOXOZ
This reminded me of the quote “Ask, and ye shall receive”. And how easy it is for me to forget this simple little adage…so simple and so powerful. Thanks for such a potent reminder of this Power for Good that I can use.
Blessings for how you show up in this glorious world.
Rev Kathy
Hi Rev Kathy!! Right?! It’s so simple and yet so easy to forget to do it! Thank you for all YOU bring this glorious world! BIG Love, Z
I just did a process in my class on creating Mental Equivalents last night. I was working on a way of being that is exciting and more expansive. There were lots of good things I realized along the way, but the biggest revelation that really woke me up was ” I need to ask for help!” I could feel new possibilities open up when I said that. And here you are affirming this realization, today, as I read this post two weeks after you posted it.
Spirit finds all kinds of ways to communicate, doesn’t It?! Sneaky and loving and with a sense of humor. xo ; – )
Hi Mary Ann,
Yay! I love this! And I love Spirit’s timing – so magical!! Thank you for letting me know.
BIG Love,
Z
