What do spirituality and politics have in common?

Anything?

Abraham Hicks, one of my favorite spiritual teachers, likes to talk about the vortex of creation. The vortex describes the experience of being connected to Source energy. And when we’re connected to Source energy?

Well, that’s when things get seriously groovy.

Now, ultimately we’re always connected to Source. We wouldn’t be breathing if we weren’t.

But fully allowing and surrendering to Source isn’t the same thing as being connected and not acknowledging it. It’s the allowing and surrendering that creates all the groovy magic.

What does all this have to do with politics?

Nothing, according to Abe. They once said that all of politics is outside the vortex.

And I can see what they mean. There’s a struggle energy inherent in a lot of political systems that’s not exactly vibin’ with the groovy, expansive vortex of Source.

But. Ultimately, everything is consciousness.

As such, our political systems are simply an outpicturing of where we are in consciousness.

Whoah. That’s both really cool and really not cool. Right?

It’s not cool to see folks suffering and dying because of cracks and breaks in a political system. Not cool at all.

But the fact that our current political systems are an outpicturing of consciousness means we each have a part to play in shifting that consciousness.

And how on earth do we do that?

There’s a way! That’s what I’m here to talk about!

Let’s use LGTBQ+ rights in the United States as an example.

A hundred years ago, there were no LGTBQ folks in the US. Kidding. Of course there were. But they were hiding. It was seriously not okay to be LGBTQ. You couldn’t be out – often not even to yourself. LGBTQ folks were discriminated against, jailed, and killed. All the time.

And today? LGBTQ people are coming out at an earlier and earlier age. We can get married. There are LGBTQ role models in the media. There are out LGBTQ people in every aspect of society, including politics.

Does this mean that everything is ducky for LGBTQ folks in the US? Nope. There’s still a lot of work to be done, especially when it comes to BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) who are LGBTQ. It’s also way better to be LGBTQ in certain areas of the US than others.

But if we focus only on everything that needs to change, we’re going to knock ourselves out of the vortex.

Instead, it’s much more effective to start by looking at the progress. Meditate on it, drink it in, revel in its growth and expansion.

Once we do this, we can turn an eye toward what needs to change.

When we start from a place of expansion? And affirm greater future good from that place?

Starting from expansion allows us to create from the vortex, not outside of it.

And when we create from that place, we’re way more likely to attract the growth and expansion we want.

Why? Because, as I said at the top of this post, our political systems are simply an outpicturing of where we are in consciousness.

If we want anything to change, we first need to change our consciousness. It’s the same process in the collective as it is in our personal growth.

And speaking of personal growth, it can be daunting to look at seemingly broken political systems and feel like it’s possible to do anything as an individual to change them.

But what if every drop in the ocean said, “Screw this ocean thing! I’m gonna bail and go somewhere else!” We’d have no ocean.

Even though we’re just a drop, we’re an essential part of the whole. And as we change our own lives – growing in peace, love, and kindness in everything we do, we’re creating a more peaceful, loving, and kind world.

And, ultimately, more peaceful, loving, and kind political systems.

It can feel overwhelming at times, but only if you spend all of your time looking at what’s broken. Limiting your exposure to the news goes a long way toward keeping you in a positive, expansive place. Which is, ultimately, the best way to participate in the shift in consciousness necessary to change the stuff the news is reporting on.

Ultimately, Abe is right. Politics is outside of the vortex.

But when we spend as much time as we can in the vortex, politics is inevitably changed.

Tricky, right?

See you in the vortex!!
