Gurus teach us that everything is spiritual. Everything. Even the smaller, mundane aspects of life are part of the Divine web.

Our Guru Max, however, has one exception to the whole “Everything is Divine” assertion.

That exception is our television set.

Last winter, deep into Covid, Melissa and I decided it was time to buy ourselves a big TV. You know, one of those huge suckers you attach to the wall and pretend you’re in a movie theater because the screen is just so frickin’ massive.

Actually, ours isn’t one of the super huge ones, because the room it goes in is on the smaller side. But still. It’s way bigger than anything we’ve had before.

We wanted it, we got it, we love it.

Max, though? Max hates the TV.

Why does Max hate the TV, thus refusing to see the Divine aspects of this wonder of creation?

Max hates the TV because, at the beginning of most TV shows or movies, there are logos.

These logos often take the form of brightly animated shapes or letters. These aggressively animated shapes and letters often dance menacingly across the screen. Why are they dancing like that? Do they have an evil agenda to eat the small cat in the room who’s just minding his own business? Probably! They probably do!

When Max sees the logo, and accompanying logo jingle (equally menacing, by the way!), he scurries out of the room.

Before the arrival of the aggressive logo, an evening of television would find Melissa, Max, and myself comfortably and cozily situated on the couch, ready to relax into a world of entertainment.

The logo put an end to the comfort and coziness of a vital member of the couch contingent.

Given the importance of a good evening of entertainment, and the importance of our Guru’s peace of mind, I came up with a solution.

Whenever I turn on the TV and the Guru is with me, I put something in front of his face. The logo will pop up on the screen, but the Guru will not see the logo. It’s a simple as that.

Back to a peaceful Guru who’s realized that the Divine is, indeed, in everything. Including the TV.

Once again, my life with the Guru taught me an important lesson.

My equivalent of the aggressive logo is social media feeds. Or, should I say, certain social media feeds.

Certain social media feeds cause me to compare and contrast my life to the pictures on the feed and come up short. It’s my version of scurrying out of the room, tail between my legs, whimpering in terror.

The lesson with Max and the TV reminded me that there’s a solution to my dilemma. I can simply not look at those feeds.

When I don’t look at them, they don’t exist. When I am not exposed to their existence, I don’t get tweaked and miserable. What a concept!

I don’t always have the discipline and self-control to apply this lesson to my social media consumption, but the more I avoid certain feeds, the better I feel. It really is as simple as that.

If I had to summarize the Guru’s latest lesson in a few sentences, it would look like this:

Everything is spiritual. But some things appear to be less spiritual than others. So, if you can, don’t expose your face to those things. Because they will scare the crap out of you.
